Holi is chaos in the best possible way — colour everywhere, water balloons flying, people dancing in streets. It’s also a nightmare for smartphones. Between coloured powders, splashes of water and slippery hands, your device doesn’t stand much of a chance unless you plan ahead.
Here’s how to protect it without spending the day worrying.
Use a waterproof pouch, not just a case
A regular silicone case won’t save your phone from coloured water seeping into charging ports or speakers. A sealed waterproof pouch is your safest bet. They’re inexpensive, transparent and still allow touchscreen use for photos and calls.
If you plan to be in the middle of water fights, this isn’t optional — it’s insurance.
Avoid taking it out repeatedly
The more you expose your phone, the higher the risk. Decide beforehand when you actually need it. If you’re stepping out for a quick photo, wipe your hands thoroughly first. Colour powders mixed with moisture can easily enter tiny openings.
Skip wired charging during the day
Wet charging ports are one of the most common causes of Holi damage. Even if your phone claims water resistance, plugging it in while moisture is trapped inside can cause corrosion.
Let it dry completely before charging. If you have wireless charging at home, even better — it avoids port contact altogether.
Turn off “Tap to Wake” and unnecessary gestures
When moisture lands on your display, it can trigger ghost touches. Disabling sensitive screen features reduces the chance of random apps opening or accidental calls while your phone is inside a pouch.
Apply a screen protector , yes, even now
Coloured powders can be mildly abrasive. Rubbing your display aggressively to clean it later may scratch the glass. A tempered glass protector adds an extra layer you won’t regret.
Keep a microfibre cloth handy
Paper towels and tissues can scratch displays, especially when mixed with gritty colour powder. A proper microfibre cloth is safer and more effective for cleaning.
If it gets wet, don’t panic. Act smart
If your phone does get soaked:
- Switch it off immediately
- Do not shake it aggressively
- Do not use a hair dryer
- Let it dry naturally in a well-ventilated area
And no, burying it in rice is not a miracle fix. Air circulation works better.
Consider leaving it behind
If you’re planning a full-blown colour war, the safest phone is the one sitting at home. Carry a basic backup device if you need to stay reachable.
Holi lasts a day. Repair bills last longer. A little preparation means you can enjoy the festival — and still have a working phone when the colours wash off.
