New Fastag rules from today: Penalties, chargeback cooling period and all you should know
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways have introduced new Fastag rules, effective February 17, 2025. These changes focus on delayed transactions, chargeback policies, and blacklisted Fastags to streamline toll payments. Here are ten key points:
Delayed transactions may result in penalties If a Fastag transaction is processed more than 15 minutes after the vehicle crosses the toll, additional charges may apply.
2/10
Toll operators liable for unpaid transactions If a delayed transaction is not completed due to insufficient balance, the toll operator will be responsible for the loss, not the user.
3/10
15-day cooling period for chargebacks Users disputing an incorrect deduction must wait for 15 days before raising a chargeback request with their bank.
4/10
Early chargeback requests will be rejected Any chargeback request filed before the cooling period ends will be declined automatically with system error code 5290.
5/10
Changes in chargeback process for blacklisted Fastags Banks can only raise chargebacks for deductions related to blacklisted or low-balance Fastags after the mandatory waiting period.
6/10
Fastags inactive for over 60 minutes may be declined If a Fastag has been inactive for 60 minutes before reaching the toll and remains inactive for another 10 minutes after crossing, the transaction will be rejected.
System will reject payments from inactive Fastags Payments from inactive or hotlisted Fastags will be declined with reason code 176, preventing toll deductions.
8/10
Toll charge disputes can only be raised after 15 days If a toll amount is deducted due to a delay, users must wait for the 15-day period before disputing the charge.
9/10
Implementation date for chargeback rule is separate While Fastag penalties start today, the exact implementation date for chargeback rule changes will be announced later.
10/10
Users must ensure Fastag balance to avoid rejections To prevent transaction failures, users should maintain sufficient balance, track deduction times, and check Fastag status before traveling.
