Microsoft Teams may soon be able to reveal your location to employers when you connect to office Wi-Fi. This feature is currently in working for both Windows and Mac computers, and is scheduled to start rolling out in February 2026.
Earlier this year, it was reported that Microsoft is planning to add a new Teams feature that will use Wi-Fi network connections to pinpoint a user's exact location. However, it now seems the feature could arrive soon, as a Microsoft Teams update planned for early 2026 highlights a new feature that will display your work location via Wi-Fi, possibly to enforce stricter surveillance.
According to Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 488800, a new feature will be rolled out on the Windows and macOS versions of Teams in 2026, which will automatically update a user's work location when they connect their device to an office Wi-Fi network. Microsoft has posted about this new feature, stating: "When users connect to their organization's Wi-Fi, Teams will automatically set their work location to reflect the building they are working in."
This means that this feature will potentially inform office administrators as soon as an employee connects to Wi-Fi in one of the company's buildings or wireless networks. Microsoft didn't reveal who would be able to see your location. However, if used by the wrong hands, this could become an unethical surveillance method, where managers monitor when their staff members start and leave work.
Microsoft has also confirmed that this feature will be turned off by default, and administrators at a given organisation will have the ability to turn it on and decide whether they will require users to opt into this surveillance system. However, when it’s finally rolled out next year, automatic location updates might be enabled by default by office administrators to keep track of workers or to possibly enforce return-to-work orders.
