xAI’s Grok 4.1 Fast is now available in preview within Microsoft Copilot Studio. The model is positioned as a fast-reasoning, text-generation system designed for handling large context windows, complex workflows and deeper tool use. It does not support image or multimedia generation.
For now, access is limited to US-based makers in early access environments. The feature is switched off by default, meaning organisation administrators must explicitly enable it before teams can start building with the model. If no action is taken, existing agents and model configurations remain unchanged.
Microsoft says readiness evaluations for additional regions are currently underway.
A broader multi-model strategy
The addition of Grok 4.1 Fast reflects Microsoft’s continued emphasis on model choice. Copilot Studio already supports models from OpenAI and Anthropic, and the inclusion of xAI expands that ecosystem further.
Microsoft has positioned Copilot Studio as a platform where organisations can select the most suitable model for specific business scenarios rather than relying on a single provider. According to the company, each model added to the lineup undergoes security, safety and quality evaluations prior to release.
Data handling is also clearly delineated. When using Grok 4.1 Fast within Copilot Studio, customer data is not retained or used to train xAI’s models. However, the models are hosted outside Microsoft-managed environments, and enterprise customers using Grok enter into a direct relationship with xAI under its own terms and data protection agreements.
The move underscores Microsoft’s evolving strategy: less about exclusivity, more about orchestration — giving enterprises structured access to multiple AI engines while maintaining administrative control.
