Marc Andreessen, renowned entrepreneur, investor and co-founder of Andreessen Horowitz made a rather interesting revelation recently. Speaking at en event, Andreessen revealed that a small Llama AI model was successfully run on a Windows 98-era Dell PC, raising intriguing questions about the timeline of conversational computing.
Andreessen suggested that the technology enabling natural, human-like interactions with computers might have been achievable nearly 30 years ago. “All of those old PCs could literally have been smart all this time,” said Andreessen.
The co-founder of Andreessen Horowitz said that the people have been working on AI for many, many years now. He suggested that the aforementioned older personal computers could have potentially possessed intelligence all along. “We could have been talking to our computers for 30 years now,” he added.
Andreessen emphasized that the field of artificial intelligence has been extensively pursued for an extended period. He also mentioned that there was an AI boom in the 1980s. “A lot of smart people in the 80s thought all this was going to happen then,” he said about the current changing AI landscape. He remarked that many intellectuals of that era anticipated the realization of such capabilities at that time, drawing parallels between the current evolving AI landscape and the 1980s.
The Llama AI model, developed by Meta, is known for its impressive capabilities despite requiring relatively minimal computational power compared to larger, more resource-intensive AI models.
