Karnataka’s Labour Department officials visited Infosys’ campuses in Bengaluru and Mysuru to assess the situation following reports of trainee layoffs. During the discussions, Infosys underscored its commitment to fair treatment and employee-friendly policies, according to people familiar with the matter.
While officials visited its Bengaluru campus on Monday, they met with officials at its Mysuru campus today (February 13th). The Labour Department has taken stock and will put together an assessment report with its findings in the next few days, a source said.
"We have collected all the necessary information and documents. We will submit the report to the government within a day or two. 348 trainees were affected," a govt official said.
In its interactions with the Labour Department, Infosys is learnt to have said that it remains a net hirer and emphasised the scale of its operations.
"While over 300 trainees were let go, it has a headcount of over three lakh. They said that they will add 20,000 freshers in FY26", one of the sources cited above said.
Further, the company officials said weeding out poor performers was necessary to maintain high quality in its ranks.
"The company said it provided transport from Mysuru to Mysuru station and Bengaluru, accommodation to those who wanted to stay back for a few days, apart from a month of severence. Further they also helped with counselling and outplacement services, apart from additional training," a second source said.
The company is also learnt to have explained its business forecasting and hiring model to the government officials. The time between issuing an offer letter and onboarding an employee typically takes a year, taking into account completion of graduation, training time and identifying projects where they can be deployed.
Moneycontrol reported last week that Infosys was laying off over 300 trainees at its Mysuru campus after they failed evaluation tests in three consecutive attempts.
The trainees were onboarded after a two-and-a-half-year-long wait, as IT companies weathered a tough demand environment.
"At Infosys, we have a rigorous hiring process where all freshers, after undergoing extensive foundational training at our Mysuru campus, are expected to clear internal assessments. All freshers get three attempts to clear the assessment, failing which they will not be able to continue with the organisation, as is also mentioned in their contract. This process has been in existence for over two decades and ensures a high quality of talent availability for our clients," Infosys said in a statement then.
