Huawei eyeing to re-enter global smartphone market with in-house chips

Huawei is ahead of Apple in terms of smartphone sales in China. It is now planning to re-enter the global smartphone market by launching smartphones with its in-house Kirin chipsets based on Huawei’s in-house HarmonyOS platform. Due to the restrictions imposed by the US trade sanctions, Huawei cannot use any Google services nor its operating system–Android. The company is now focusing on expanding into 60 countries, a report by NikkeiAsia reveals.

Huawei could not compete in the global market previously because its phones do not offer the complete Android experience, which is a prerequisite for any user looking to buy an Android phone. The phones were a great success in China but people outside China could not really use them. But now Huawei has its own HarmonyOS–which has its own software and app store. Although it still does not provide the Android experience, the inclusion of an app store makes things more appealing for buyers

Things are not too simple for Huawei yet because it still cannot access advanced chips from TSMC, which means that its Kirin chips are a few generations behind its competitors–this is one of the strongest reasons why most people may skip buying a Huawei phone over a regular Android or an Apple device. Despite the challenges, Huawei is working hard to improve the performance of HarmonyOS, reduce lag. It is making the chipsets capable enough to complete with Snapdragon 8 Elite.
