Google is getting ready to make a big change in how its smartphones are built. According to a report by Nikkei Asia, the company will start developing and making its high-end Pixel phones in Vietnam this year. This is an important shift, as most of this work has traditionally been done in China.
People familiar with the matter say Google will begin building its premium phones such as the Pixel, Pixel Pro, and Pixel Fold in Vietnam from the very beginning. This means not just assembling parts, but working on the phone’s design, testing it, fixing issues, and getting it ready for large-scale production. For now, Google’s cheaper Pixel A series will continue to be developed in China.
Making a phone from scratch is one of the hardest parts of smartphone production. It involves hundreds of engineers working closely with factory partners, along with a lot of time, money, and equipment to make sure the phone works properly and can be produced smoothly. Suppliers see this stage as a big responsibility, because if things go wrong, the phone might not launch at all.
Google’s move is similar to what Apple has been doing. Apple has been steadily increasing its manufacturing presence in countries like India and Vietnam. The goal for both companies is clear. They want to rely less on China and spread out their supply chains so they are not dependent on just one country.
This shift is happening at a time when global tech companies are facing a lot of uncertainty. Trade tensions and tariff policies, especially those introduced during the administration of Donald Trump, have made companies rethink where they make their products. By moving production to other countries, they hope to reduce risks and long-term costs.
Vietnam is not entirely new to Google. The company already assembles high-end Pixel phones there and carries out some testing work. Expanding this to include full phone development is seen as a natural next step. Still, the move is not easy. Export rules from China make it harder to move machines and skilled workers to other countries, which has slowed expansion plans for both Google and Apple in the past.
Industry experts say that if Google and Apple succeed in building phones outside China from the ground up, it will be a big moment for the global tech industry. It would show that countries like Vietnam now have the skills and systems needed to handle complex smartphone production.
