The Parliamentary Committee on Empowerment of Women has summoned senior Google, Meta and X (formerly Twitter) representatives on August 19 to discuss online safety of women and cyber crimes targeting them. Officials of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology will also be present in the meeting.
According to a notice issued by the Lok Sabha secretariat, the meeting is scheduled for August 19 at 3 pm in Parliament House annexe.
Executives from Google (YouTube), Meta, which operates Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, and X will be heard “in connection with the examination of the subject ‘Cyber Crimes and Cyber Safety of Women',” alongside IT ministry officials.
The session is part of the committee’s review of measures to combat harassment, abuse and exploitation of women in the digital space.
The panel is expected to seek explanations on how the platforms handle online abuse, content moderation and cooperation with law enforcement in cyber crime cases involving women.
