Garmin gets ahead of Apple
Garmin has unveiled the Fenix 8 Pro, its first smartwatch with built-in satellite and cellular support, just days before Apple is set to reveal the Apple Watch Ultra 3.
InReach satellite technology
The watch integrates Garmin’s inReach system, allowing users to send text messages and location check-ins via satellite using the Garmin Messenger app. With LTE, users can also make calls, send 30-second voice clips, share live locations, and receive weather updates. An SOS function links directly to Garmin’s Response centre, which has coordinated over 17,000 rescues worldwide.
Hardware and health features
The Fenix 8 Pro introduces a microLED display hitting 4,500 nits, making it the brightest smartwatch yet. Built tough with dive-rated construction and leakproof buttons, it also includes a built-in flashlight. Fitness features cover endurance scores, training suggestions, sleep tracking, ECG, and full health monitoring.
Pricing and availability
Available in 47mm and 51mm sizes, the AMOLED model starts at $1,200 with 27-day battery life, while the 51mm microLED version costs $2,000 with 10-day endurance. Sales begin September 8, one day before Apple’s big launch. Garmin’s satellite services require a subscription starting at $7.99/month, unlike Apple, which currently offers its satellite SOS free.
