DIGIPIN was officially announced by the Ministry of Communications on May 27, 2025, as a part of its broader goal to modernise India’s addressing infrastructure. How is DIGIPIN different from regular PIN codes?
India’s current postal system uses 6-digit PIN codes, which denote large geographical areas—sometimes covering multiple towns or localities. This often leads to confusion, incorrect deliveries, and delays, especially in areas with similar names or shared PIN codes.
DIGIPIN overcomes these issues with key differences:
Precise identification: Each DIGIPIN corresponds to a specific property, not a general area, using latitude and longitude coordinates.
Better accuracy: Unlike broad PIN codes, DIGIPIN offers location-level granularity, reducing errors in navigation and logistics.
Grid-based mapping: India has been digitally mapped into small grid squares, and each grid has its own unique 10-digit code, allowing for highly accurate digital addresses.
Platform-neutral: DIGIPIN is open-source and interoperable, enabling seamless integration with GIS, e-commerce, logistics, and emergency response systems.
Improved efficiency: It supports both urban and rural delivery systems, ensuring equal accuracy in hard-to-reach or unorganised areas.
