Cupertino-based tech giant Apple was forced to loosen its grip on the App Store monetisation, as a federal judge ruled that the company violated a 2021 injunction that mandated allowing developers to include in-app links to direct users to third-party payment options, without charging a commission on those transactions. According to Apple analyst Mark Gurman via his latest Power On newsletter, Apple aims to fully repeal the recent court ruling, which instructed the company to stop restricting developers from using external payment methods. Moreover, Apple has already asked the court to pause this ruling as part of its appeals process.

The company could also try to strike a compromise with the court if things don’t go in its favour. Further, Apple is asking the appeals court to respond before May 28, suggesting it could face massive financial losses if the current ruling stays on. Apple is using the Google Play Store and Samsung’s app store as examples, which also take a cut of external payments from their third-party purchases.
