Apple’s upcoming smart glasses could be one of its most ambitious products yet, with reports suggesting that the second-generation version will include an in-lens display capable of switching between two distinct modes depending on the device they are connected to. The concept signals Apple’s intent to blend mixed reality and everyday computing into a single, seamless experience.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who shared details in his Power On newsletter, Apple is exploring a system where the smart glasses will run a full version of visionOS when paired with a Mac, effectively turning them into a lightweight augmented reality workstation. When connected to an iPhone, however, the glasses will reportedly shift to a simplified, mobile-friendly interface that allows users to access notifications, messages, media, and essential apps in a more minimal setup.

This dual-mode functionality would make the device far more versatile than current offerings in the market. By giving users the ability to transition between a desktop-grade and mobile-grade experience, Apple could create a product that appeals to both professionals and casual users. It also fits into the company’s long-term strategy of creating a tightly integrated ecosystem, where hardware and software work together across multiple devices.

The smart glasses are expected to rival the Meta Ray-Ban range, which already includes an in-lens display and starts at $799 in the United States. While Apple’s first-generation glasses are unlikely to include a similar display, Gurman claims that they will focus on practical functions such as built-in speakers for audio playback, cameras for taking photos and videos, and voice controls through Siri. There may also be health-related features, continuing Apple’s growing push into wellness technology.
