  • Apple plans major Mac updates in 2026 with new chips and redesigns
  • Low-cost MacBook with A18 Pro chip may launch in late 2026 to expand market reach
  • Redesigned MacBook Pro with OLED touch display expected by late 2026

Apple is reportedly lining up one of its most ambitious years for the Mac in recent memory. According to the latest reports, 2026 will bring updates across nearly the entire Mac portfolio, ranging from modest chip refreshes to long-overdue hardware redesigns. There is also growing evidence that Apple plans to introduce a lower-cost MacBook that could significantly expand the platform’s reach.

The first half of 2026 is expected to focus on incremental but important updates. Apple is likely to kick things off with a MacBook Pro refresh that centres on new silicon rather than a new design. This update is expected to introduce the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, along with Apple’s in-house N1 networking chip. Beyond performance and connectivity improvements, little else is expected to change, as the long-rumoured redesign is still slated for later in the year.

A MacBook Air refresh is also on track for the first half of 2026. Similar to the MacBook Pro update, this is expected to be a straightforward internal upgrade, bringing the M5 chip and possibly the N1 networking chip. The overall design is likely to remain unchanged, with more significant upgrades such as OLED displays not expected until at least 2028.

Desktop users are likely to see more interesting movement during this period. Apple is expected to refresh the Mac Studio in the first half of the year. After the unusual combination of M4 Max and M3 Ultra chips in the previous generation, the next Mac Studio is widely expected to feature the M5 Max. Whether the higher-end configuration uses an M4 Ultra or M5 Ultra chip remains unclear, though recent reports lean towards an M5 Ultra debut.
