Apple’s iPad roadmap for 2026: What to expect from Air, mini and the entry-level model

Apple is preparing a broad iPad refresh in 2026, starting with a new iPad Air powered by the M4 chip, followed by an A19-based entry-level iPad and a significantly upgraded iPad mini with OLED. While most changes focus on internal improvements, the iPad mini stands out as the most meaningful update of the year.

  • Apple to refresh nearly all iPad models in 2026 with incremental upgrades
  • iPad Air to get M4 chip, improved connectivity, and brighter display options
  • iPad mini may get OLED display, A19 Pro chip in first major update since 2024

Apple is expected to use 2026 to quietly realign its iPad portfolio rather than radically reinvent it. The company has already set the tone by introducing the M5 iPad Pro late last year, and the rest of the lineup is now in line for incremental but important upgrades. According to current reports and industry chatter, nearly every iPad model will see a refresh over the course of the year, even if the changes remain largely under the hood.

The first major launch of 2026 is likely to be the new iPad Air, expected around March. This model is tipped to move to the M4 chip, delivering a modest performance jump over the M3 generation. While this does not radically change the iPad Air’s positioning, it keeps the device comfortably ahead of the standard iPad and reinforces its role as the default choice for users who want strong performance without stepping up to Pro pricing.

Connectivity is where the next iPad Air could see a more noticeable improvement. Following the debut of Apple’s in-house N1 networking chip and C1X modem in the M5 iPad Pro, the same hardware is expected to trickle down to the Air. This would bring faster and more efficient cellular performance along with Wi-Fi 7 support, narrowing the gap between the Air and Pro models in day-to-day usage. Beyond that, expectations remain conservative. There is talk of brighter displays, possibly extending the 600-nit panel to smaller sizes, and fresh colour options. Higher refresh rates would be welcome, but there is no strong indication that Apple will move beyond 60Hz on the iPad Air just yet. OLED, while frequently discussed, appears to be off the table until at least 2027.

Later in the first half of the year, Apple is expected to refresh its most affordable iPad. The headline change here is the move to the A19 chip, which would enable Apple Intelligence features on the entry-level model for the first time. That shift alone makes this more than a routine spec bump, as it brings Apple’s latest software capabilities to a much wider audience. Similar to the iPad Air, the budget iPad is also likely to gain Apple’s in-house modem and networking hardware, improving efficiency and future-proofing the device.
