With iOS 26.4, Apple is allowing third-party conversational AI apps to run on CarPlay for the first time. Voice-based chatbots such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude will be able to offer hands-free interactions directly through the CarPlay interface.
The change appears in Apple’s updated CarPlay Developer Guide, which lists voice-based conversational apps as a newly supported category starting with iOS 26.4.
How it will work in practice
Apple is introducing a new voice control screen designed specifically for conversational apps. While a chatbot session is active, apps can display simple, vehicle-optimised visual feedback to accompany spoken responses.
To qualify, developers must apply for a dedicated entitlement and update their apps to support the new voice control interface. This keeps chatbot interactions consistent with Apple’s long-standing focus on reducing driver distraction.
The functionality is deliberately limited. Third-party AI apps will not be able to control vehicle systems or iPhone settings, and there is no wake word support. Users will still need to manually open the chatbot app before speaking, after which all interaction remains voice-driven.
Why this is a big shift for CarPlay
Until now, CarPlay’s tight app restrictions meant companies like Anthropic, OpenAI and Google had no direct path onto Apple’s in-car platform. Drivers were effectively locked into Siri for conversational tasks.
Allowing AI chatbots marks a significant philosophical shift. Apple is expanding choice while still drawing a hard line around safety and system control. Consider it a carefully fenced playground rather than an open road.
When it’s coming
iOS 26.4 is currently available in beta and is expected to roll out publicly later this spring. Once live, CarPlay users can expect a wave of app updates as AI developers rush to add support.
