Alibaba, the Chinese e-commerce company, has just made its latest AI model, Wan 2.1, free for public use. This means anyone whether you are a researcher, developer, or a business owner, you can access it to generate images and videos from text or pictures.
Why is this a big deal? Well, AI-generated visuals are becoming more advanced, and Alibaba’s move makes this technology available to more people. The company has released four different versions of Wan 2.1, with some capable of processing 14 billion data points. That basically means better quality and more accurate results.
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen AI companies go open-source. Earlier this year, the Chinese AI called DeepSeek surprised everyone by launching powerful AI models at a low cost. Now, Alibaba is stepping up to compete with giants like OpenAI.
Alibaba first introduced this AI model in January under the name "Wanx" before simplifying it to Wan. Since then, it has climbed to the top of VBench, a ranking system for video-generating AI, thanks to its ability to handle complex scenes and interactions.
But that’s not all. Alibaba has also teased a new AI reasoning model, QwQ-Max, which will be open-source soon. On top of that, the company plans to invest a whopping 380 billion yuan ($52 billion) over the next three years to boost its cloud and AI technology.
With all these moves, Alibaba is making it clear that it wants to be a major player in AI.
