Photoshop is now letting AI take over the heavy lifting of editing photos. Adobe has introduced a set of new AI-powered tools designed to make adding or removing people and objects from photos faster and more realistic — no advanced editing skills required.
At the centre of this update is a new feature called Harmonize, which automatically adjusts lighting, colour tones, shadows, and contrast to make inserted elements blend naturally into the rest of the image. Based on Adobe’s earlier Project Perfect Blend, this tool removes much of the manual work traditionally involved in compositing. It’s available in beta on Photoshop for desktop, web, and iOS.
AI upscaling and smarter object removal
Another feature now in beta is AI-based image upscaling, which Adobe claims can enhance resolution up to 8MP without degrading quality. This will be especially useful for restoring old images or adapting low-resolution photos for digital platforms.
The automatic object removal tool has also been updated. It can now erase unwanted elements with better accuracy, generating realistic backgrounds to fill in the gaps — or nothing at all, if that’s what you want. Earlier, the tool would often insert new elements when removing old ones, which led to awkward edits.
While Adobe’s Content Credentials system tags AI-edited images with metadata showing how they were manipulated, it doesn’t prevent misuse. Harmonize makes it alarmingly easy to fake images — a double-edged sword in the wrong hands.
The only technical limitation is that users still need to source the original and additional images themselves. Otherwise, Photoshop does all the visual matching.
Adobe insists it’s taking content safety seriously. Photoshop product manager Joel Baer told The Verge, “We’ve implemented safeguards such as Content Credentials to protect users and combat misleading visuals.”
