Adobe has issued a clarification on the future of Adobe Animate after an earlier customer email sparked concern that the animation software was being discontinued. The company has now confirmed that Adobe Animate is not being shut down and will remain available for both existing and new users, though it has entered maintenance mode.
The update was shared by Adobe community team member Mike Chambers, who acknowledged that the earlier communication failed to meet company standards and caused unnecessary confusion within the creative community.
Adobe Animate now in maintenance mode
Adobe explained that when active development of a product is deprioritised, the standard approach is to move it into maintenance mode.
Under this status, Adobe Animate will continue to receive security updates and bug fixes but will no longer get new feature additions. Importantly, the software will remain accessible, with no plans to remove it from Adobe’s product offerings.
The company clarified that this approach is different from discontinuation, where products are phased out entirely.
No plans to discontinue or restrict access
Addressing concerns directly, Adobe stated that it is not discontinuing Adobe Animate and will not block access for customers.
Both new and existing users will still be able to download and use the application, reversing the implication made in the earlier email that suggested limited availability and timelines for removal.
Adobe also noted that if it ever chooses to fully discontinue a product, it would work closely with users to provide adequate transition time and minimise disruption.
Commitment to long-term content access
A key focus of Adobe’s clarification was its promise to ensure creators retain access to their files and content.
The company said it will continue working with the Animate community to guarantee long-term usability of projects, regardless of the software’s development status. This includes safeguarding file compatibility and ensuring content does not become inaccessible in the future.
Chambers personally apologised for the stress caused by the earlier communication, noting his long history with Flash and Animate tools and recognising their importance to animators, educators, and developers.
Adobe has also published official documentation outlining Animate’s maintenance mode status to provide transparency and ongoing updates.
