WhatsApp introduced several new features in 2025, focusing on security, privacy, organisation, and AI-driven interactions. These updates reshaped how users communicate, verify their identity, manage chats, and interact with Meta’s built-in assistant. Here are the ten major additions rolled out this year.
Voice and video responses for missed calls When a call is unanswered, callers now get an option to leave a short voice or video clip directly from the call screen. The recorded message appears in the chat alongside the missed-call notification, offering a more personal alternative to a simple text.
Passkey-based login WhatsApp introduced passkeys as a replacement for OTP-based verification. Users can now log in using face authentication, fingerprints, or device-stored credentials, reducing the chances of SIM-swap or SMS interception attacks.
Meta AI upgrades with voice mode and private sessions Meta’s built-in AI assistant on WhatsApp now supports real-time voice conversations, enabling users to speak to the bot naturally. An incognito mode was also introduced, ensuring specific queries remain private and are not saved in chat history.
Timed “About” status updates The traditional “About” section now works like a temporary status. Users can set short updates — such as being busy or travelling — and choose expiry windows ranging from one hour to a full day. These appear on profiles and disappear automatically.
Screen sharing with audio in calls During video calls, users can share their device screens with system audio enabled. This works across Android and iOS for both one-on-one and group calls, making it easier to share videos or walk someone through an app.
New chat filters and a dedicated “Favorites” tab Users can now sort chats by unread messages, groups, or their curated favorites list. Frequently contacted people or important groups can be pinned to this new tab for quicker access.
Restrictions on third-party AI tools A policy shift rolled out toward the end of 2025 blocked external AI platforms from plugging into WhatsApp Business APIs. As a result, third-party tools like Copilot and OpenAI-powered assistants can no longer integrate directly, leaving Meta AI as the primary option on the platform.
