Following the most devastating loss of his career, Brazilian football sensation Neymar started crying. Former Liverpool striker Phil Coutinho scored two goals as Vasco Da Gama crushed Neymar's Santos 0–6 on Sunday in the continuing Brazilian Serie A.
Santos fired their coach, Cléber Xavier, shortly after the loss.
Before Coutinho scored twice in the second half to make it 3-0, Lucas Piton opened the scoring with the first goal of the evening. Vasco Da Gama's incredible performance, which moved them out of the relegation zone, was completed by David Correa De Fonseca, Rayan, and Danilo Neves.
Following the thrashing, the forward expressed his sadness at the lackluster performance and empathy for the supporters' feelings.
“I’m ashamed. I’m totally disappointed with our performance. The fans have every right to protest, obviously without using violence … But if they want to curse and insult, they’re in their right," Neymar said after the match.
“It’s a feeling of extreme shame. I’ve never experienced this in my life. Unfortunately, it happened. The tears were from anger, from everything. Unfortunately, I can’t help in every way. Anyway, it was total s—, that’s the reality," he added.
Fernando Diniz, the head coach of Vasco Da Gama, and the support staff comforted Neymar before the former Barcelona player slowly left the field. The supporters turned their backs towards the field to express their disapproval.
Neymar received a booking during the match, and since it was his third yellow card of the year, he will not play in Santos' upcoming match against Bahia.
Santos is now only two points above the relegation zone as a result of the loss.
