Famous English journalist and media personality Piers Morgan, known for being a passionate sports fan, has sparked controversy with a strange tweet. He took a swipe at people who are choosing to attend the ongoing Wimbledon 2025 Tennis Championship instead of the third Test between England and India at Lord’s, London.
On X (formerly Twitter), Morgan wrote: “Anyone who goes to Wimbledon during a Lord’s Test match should give their head a wobble. One is the greatest event of the English sporting summer season, the other is people not skilled enough to play cricket, hitting a few balls over a net.”
It didn't stop there as he bashed Wimbledon once again, sharing a video of Irish Guards playing at Lord's. "You don’t get this at Wimbledon… the Irish Guards bashing out some absolute bangers. #Lords" - he wrote this time.
His tweet quickly went viral and drew heavy criticism. Fans on social media slammed Morgan for insulting Wimbledon, one of the most prestigious tournaments in global sport.
As Day Three of the Lord’s Test plays out in thrilling fashion with England and India going toe-to-to, Wimbledon is also heating up at the All England Tennis Club. The women’s singles final between Amanda Anisimova and Iga Swiatek is underway on Centre Court. The men’s final will be played on Sunday, July 13, featuring Jannik Sinner against Carlos Alcaraz.

Morgan’s lifetime ban from Wimbledon
Interestingly, Morgan himself is banned for life from the Wimbledon Tennis Club. He revealed this in an episode of the Good Trouble podcast, during a conversation with Nick Kyrgios.
Morgan said: “I trained on the Wimbledon newspaper, so I covered the Wimbledon tennis. One of the first scoops I ever had was that I infiltrated security at Wimbledon tennis. I got into the Royal Box. I got into the players’ dressing room, I was 19 and I got banned for life from the Wimbledon tennis club.”
He continued: “The chairman Buzzer Haddington wrote to the newspaper’s editor and said I would never be allowed to cross the hallowed turf again. But I was given a lifetime ban for exposing genuine security issues. I managed to literally be having a gin and tonic in the Royal Box on a match day during the tournament. I got into the players’ dressing room and was talking to players. It was nuts. It wouldn’t happen now but at the time it was exhilarating.”
Despite ban, Morgan spoke warmly about the unique charm of the tournament. “What Wimbledon means to people is that it’s for everyone, whether you love tennis or not, everyone is aware of Wimbledon and what it means, and the clotted cream and the scones and the Pimms and the bands and the royal family coming in and Cliff Richard singing his songs. There is a certain magic about Wimbledon which no other tournament has and that’s what makes it a special thing. Not just for the players but also the British people and tourists,” he said.
Hence, given his past praise of Wimbledon, many fans were stunned by Morgan’s harsh comment.
