Rohit Sharma, the former captain of India, attended the 27th CEAT Cricket Rating Awards in Mumbai last week, marking his first public appearance since being ousted as ODI captain. Rohit attracted attention for more than just his physical change, as he appeared noticeably fitter and thinner. His considerate gesture at the ceremony, in particular, has gone viral.
Rohit seemed at ease as he chatted with his wife Ritika Sajdeh throughout the evening while sitting next to ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer. Iyer had previously gone on stage to accept the CEAT JioStar Award, but instead of holding it or placing it on a table, he returned to his seat and put the keepsake on the floor next to him.
Shortly after, Rohit saw the trophy close to Iyer's feet. In a move that has subsequently received widespread acclaim on social media, the 38-year-old discreetly scooped it up and set it on a neighboring table.
Fans praised Rohit for his regard for honors and accomplishments, seeing it as a minor but significant indication of his leadership and humility.
Additionally, it was Rohit's first public appearance since Shubman Gill assumed the ODI captaincy. The seasoned opener, however, didn't appear to be letting go of the limelight. After leading India to consecutive ICC championships, winning the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy, Rohit's rekindled enthusiasm and fitness made it clear that he is still eager for more.
Speaking on the sidelines of the event, Rohit stated that cricket is still his top priority, especially the forthcoming ODI series against Australia that begins on October 19.
"I love playing against them. I love going to Australia. It's a very challenging country to play cricket. People there love the game as well," he said.
He added, "Australia is a different challenge every time they have played against us. Having been there now several times, I do understand what to expect. Hopefully we can go there and do what the Indian team is supposed to do and get the result in our favour."
Rohit's serene poise and natural respect during the event, even while not wearing the captain's badge, demonstrated why he is still one of the most respected players in Indian cricket.
