Widely expected to break some of the great Sachin Tendulkar’s records in Test cricket, former England captain Joe Root added another feather to his glittering cap on the second day of the fifth and final Test against India at The Oval on Friday (August 1).
Root struck Mohammed Siraj for two consecutive boundaries in the 33rd over of England first innings to reach the score of 29 and with that surpassed Tendulkar in the list of most runs at home venues in Test cricket.

The list is headed by former Australia captain Ricky Ponting, who scored 7578 runs at home venues, followed by Tendulkar who had 7216 runs at home venues. By reaching 7220 runs at that moment, Root went past Tendulkar.

With 2,000 Test runs against India at home, Root also joined Sir Don Bradman as only the second player in history to achieve this feat. Bradman, who accumulated 2,354 runs against England, making him the only player with a higher aggregate in home Tests.

But Siraj dismissed Root on the very next delivery by trapping him plumb in front of the wicket. Though Root went for the review, the replays showed that he was out. Root hit 6 fours in his 29-run knock that came off 45 deliveries and his dismissal left England at 175/4 after 33 overs. Earlier, Gus Atkinson took 5/33 as India were bowled out for 224 runs in their first innings.
