Reigning champions Chennai Super Kings will host last year’s second-placed side Gujarat Titans on Tuesday. The match will be played at the MA Chidambaram stadium, also known as the Chepauk stadium from 7:30 PM onwards.
While both teams have won their first matches this season, Chennai holds the upper hand as they play in their home conditions. The Chennai Super Kings also have the psychological advantage of beating GT two times at this venue last year.

The pitch at this venue is traditionally low and slow and their legendary ex-skipper M S Dhoni used the conditions exceptionally to extend a vice-like grip on the opposition with his slow bowlers. Though Ruturah Gaikwad is new to the job, he has the services of old war-horse Ravindra Jadeja and Maheesh Theekshana to cast a web of spin. Young Rachin Ravindra’s bowling style is also suited to the condition. Apart from them, Mustafizzur Rehman with his 4-wicket haul in the last match showed how lethal he can be on the surface.
CSK vs GT Toss
The effect of the toss in CSK vs GT match could be crucial here as teams batting first hold a distinct advantage. Seventy Seven (77) IPL matches have been played here so far and teams batting first have won 41 of them which is close to 60 percent success rate. Teams batting second have won 31 and their success rate is close to 40 percent.
However, this has not translated into toss records also as teams batting first and teams batting second have won similar matches. Teams batting first have won 39 matches while the teams bowling first after winning the toss have won 38 matches.
If teams use the logic of win percentage on batting first, they would like to bat first. This was a favorite decision of MS Dhoni on this ground when he was the captain and Ruturaj Gaikwad may also follow suit. When RCB won the toss in the last match, the side also batted first though they couldn’t translate this advantage into winning the match.
So the mantra here could well be – win the toss and bat first!
