Accuweather predicted a 53% chance of thunderstorms on the first day which turned out to be true as almost the whole day was spoiled by rain. Day 2 was predicted to start with a morning shower, followed by humid and cloudy conditions, eventually giving way to clearer skies to play cricket which happened. Similarly, Day 3 (Monday) is likely to feature a couple of showers, followed by humid weather with intervals of clouds and sunshine. Day 4 will have a couple of showers in the morning with the weather brightening up while Day 5 will begin as a partly sunny day before a thunderstorm in the afternoon.
WTC Final qualification scenario: What will happen if rain forces draw at India?
India currently sit third on the World Test Championship (WTC) points table with a PCT (percentage of points) of 57.29. With three Tests remaining in the cycle, including the ongoing match at the Gabba, they are in a must-win situation to keep their WTC final hopes alive. Considering Australia's upcoming two-match series against Sri Lanka, India cannot afford any slip-ups.
If rain disrupts play at the Gabba and the match ends in a draw, both India and Australia will earn four points each. This will lower India's PCT to 55.88, though they will remain in third place on the standings.
In contrast, Australia's PCT will rise to 58.89, giving them a slight edge over India at this critical stage. Meanwhile, South Africa will maintain their top spot with a PCT of 63.33.
A draw match in Brisbane would significantly dent India's WTC final chances, as it would leave the door wide open for Australia and South Africa. Both teams would have two additional matches compared to India, providing them with greater opportunities to consolidate their standings.
