Andre Russell on Sunday announced retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL). The former West Indies all-rounder, however, will be seen in a new role for the forthcoming season as he joins the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) support staff in the capacity of a power coach.
Russell, 37, had joined the KKR in 2014 and went on to become the franchise's biggest stars, mostly due to his explosive knocks. In addition he was also a handy custodian with the ball. Russell represented the franchise 133 times and was part of the 2014 and 2024 title-winning campaigns.
Apart from KKR, Russell has also represented Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) in the lucrative T20 league.
He was retained by the franchise ahead of the mega auction last year for Rs 12 crore but it wasn't the case this time around. His performance dipped significantly in the 2025 edition, as he amassed 167 runs in 13 innings, while picking eight wickets at an economy of almost 12 runs an over.

KKR had earlier named Abhishek Nayar as their head coach for the season and former Australia all-rounder Shane Watson as the assistant coach.
KKR have so far made four final appearances in IPL, and thrice (2012, 2014, 2024) won the title. They finished runners-up in the 2021 season, staging one of the most remarkable comebacks in the tournament's history.
The development comes a day after former South African captain Faf du Plessis said he will not be participating in IPL 2026, which will be the first time in 14 years, but will be exploring an opportunity to play in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
