The year 2025 offers a celestial treat, though limited for India. With four eclipses lined up, only one will grace Indian skies. Rajendra Prakash Gupt, Superintendent of Jiwaji Observatory, shared the details with PTI.
First Half of 2025: Missed Opportunities for India
The year’s first lunar eclipse falls on 14 March. This total lunar eclipse, visible elsewhere, coincides with daytime in India. Observers in America, Western Europe, and Western Africa can catch this event, PTI quoted Mr Gupt as saying.
Later, a partial solar eclipse occurs on 29 March. Unfortunately, this celestial moment also skips Indian skies. It will be visible across North America, Greenland, and north-western Russia.

A Celestial Highlight for India in September
Indian skywatchers can enjoy a full lunar eclipse on 7–8 September. The event, visible across Asia and Europe, will last from 8:58 PM to 2:25 AM. This captivating eclipse will turn the moon a reddish hue, Mr Gupt added.
However, the partial solar eclipse on 21–22 September won’t be visible here. It can be observed in New Zealand, Melanesia, and West Antarctica.
More Celestial Wonders Await in 2025
Apart from eclipses, India will witness meteor showers. The Quadrantids peak on 3–4 January, offering 80–120 meteors per hour. The Perseids on 12–13 August and Geminids on 14–15 December promise dazzling displays.

Three supermoons will light up skies on 7 October, 5 November, and 5 December. These will appear brighter and larger than usual. The rare Mars Opposition on 16 January brings Mars closest to Earth. Meanwhile, a Pink Micromoon on 13 April combines a full moon with its farthest distance.
Celestial enthusiasts in India can look forward to these events. While eclipses are limited, meteor showers and supermoons will surely mesmerise.
