The loss of Gujarat’s majestic lions is alarming. The state government confirmed 286 lion deaths in two years. Many died naturally, but unnatural causes also played a role. The revelation raises serious concerns about conservation and habitat threats.

In response to a question by Congress MLA Shailesh Parmar, Gujarat’s Forest and Environment Minister shared distressing figures. A total of 121 lions died in 2023, while 165 perished in 2024.

Among them, 58 adult lions and 63 cubs died in 2023. The numbers climbed in 2024, with 85 adults and 80 cubs lost. Natural causes accounted for 102 adult and 126 cub deaths. However, unnatural deaths claimed 41 adults and 17 cubs, highlighting serious concerns.
