A dazzling glimpse into the Orion Nebula reveals two young stars, showcasing their brilliance amid cosmic dust. The Hubble Space Telescope's latest image captures the awe-inspiring beauty of this stellar nursery, located 1,300 light-years away.
The stars, named HOPS 150 and HOPS 153, are protostars – young stars still in formation. They are part of the Herschel Orion Protostar Survey, conducted using the European Space Agency’s Herschel Space Observatory. These stars represent the dynamic processes of the universe's creation, glowing with distinctive colours and activity.
HOPS 150: A Binary Star System in Formation
HOPS 150, glowing golden-red, resides in the image's corner. This system includes two protostars orbiting each other as a binary system. Each star is surrounded by a small, dusty disk, feeding their growth.
A dark cloud of gas and dust obscures the system. This cloud, over 2,000 times Earth's distance from the sun, gradually collapses onto the stars. According to ESA, these protostars are halfway through their journey to maturity, emitting a mix of infrared and other light.
HOPS 153: A Younger Star with Vibrant Jets
On the left side of the image lies HOPS 153, seen as a colourful jet piercing the nebula's gas and dust. This jet is an outflow of matter from the star’s early evolution.
HOPS 153 remains enshrouded in dense, cold gas, preventing its visibility. However, the jet it emits is brightly visible, highlighting its influence on the surrounding nebula. ESA stated this young stellar object is much earlier in its lifecycle than HOPS 150.
The star's activity will continue shaping its environment, ejecting material that heats nearby gases. This process may influence nearby star formation and potentially slow the star's growth.
