Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost lunar lander has sent its final message. After landing on March 2, 2025, it now rests on the Moon forever. Its farewell words, "Goodnight friends," marked the end of a historic journey.
A Mission That Made History
Blue Ghost landed in the Mare Crisium region with precision. It became the first commercial spacecraft to achieve a successful soft landing. It reached within 100 metres of its target, proving its navigation system’s accuracy.
The lander carried ten scientific instruments for lunar research. These included studies on lunar dust and solar wind. The mission was part of NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) programme. This initiative encourages private companies to explore space.
A Legacy Left on the Moon
Before shutting down, Blue Ghost left a message of hope. "Here lies Blue Ghost, a testament to the team who built and operated this machine," it stated. The lander will now remain on the lunar surface for centuries.
Firefly Aerospace plans to return with Blue Ghost Mission 2 in 2026. The next mission aims to deploy a rover to study lunar resources. Blue Ghost’s success shows how private companies can lead space exploration.
