Karva, a devoted wife, possessed immense shakti (spiritual power) born from her love for her husband. One day, while her husband was bathing in a river, a crocodile attacked him. Karva quickly bound the crocodile with cotton yarn and demanded Yama, the god of death, send the creature to hell. Initially refusing, Yama feared the wrath of a pativrata wife and ultimately sent the crocodile to hell, blessing Karva’s husband with a long and prosperous life. Karva and her husband then lived happily, inspiring the tradition of Karwa Chauth, where women fast and pray for their husband’s well-being.
