Nirjala Ekadashi, falling during the Shukla Paksha of Jyeshtha month, is considered the most powerful of all 24 Ekadashis in the Hindu calendar. In 2025, Nirjala Ekadashi will be observed on June 6 (Friday). As the name "Nirjala" suggests—'nir' meaning 'without' and 'jala' meaning 'water'—this fast is observed without food or water for a full 24 hours. This makes it the most strict and difficult Ekadashi vrat of the year.

Spiritual Significance of Nirjala Ekadashi

This vrat is also known as:

These names come from the legend of Bhima, the second Pandava, who struggled to keep fasts due to his appetite. Upon guidance from Sage Vyasa, Bhima observed Nirjala Ekadashi once a year, which gave him the same spiritual benefit as observing all 24 Ekadashis. Thus, it is believed that those who observe Nirjala Ekadashi sincerely gain the merits of all other Ekadashis combined. It is also said to cleanse sins, bring peace, prosperity, and ultimately lead to moksha (liberation).
