Raksha Bandhan Katha: The Story of Lord Indra and Shachi from Bhavishya Purana

Raksha Bandhan, the festival that celebrates the unbreakable bond between brothers and sisters, holds deep spiritual meaning in Hindu tradition. Among the many legends associated with it, the story found in the Bhavishya Purana is considered one of the most authentic. This tale not only explains the origin of Raksha Bandhan but also highlights its divine purpose and significance.

According to the Bhavishya Purana, there was once a fierce and prolonged battle between the Devas (Gods) and Asuras (Demons). This war lasted for twelve long years. In the end, the demons gained victory over the gods and took control of Indra’s kingdom, along with all three realms, Heaven (Swarg Lok), Earth (Prithvi Lok), and the Underworld (Patal Lok). This defeat shook the gods, and Lord Indra, the king of the heavens, turned to Guru Brihaspati, the spiritual teacher of the Devas, for guidance.

Guru Brihaspati advised Lord Indra to perform a sacred ritual known as Raksha Vidhan. This ritual was meant to invoke divine protection through the power of mantras. Guru Brihaspati also provided specific Raksha Mantras to be used during the ceremony. On the holy day of Shravana Purnima, the ritual of Raksha Vidhan was performed. During this ceremony, a Raksha Potli (a sacred thread or amulet) was energized with divine mantras. After the ritual, Shachi, also known as Indrani, the wife of Lord Indra, tied this protective thread on his right wrist.
