This nine-day festival is the only time in the year when the three deities are taken out of the main temple and placed on giant wooden chariots to travel 3 km to the Gundicha Temple, which is considered to be the home of their aunt. The return journey is known as Bahuda Yatra, observed on the ninth day. Devotees believe that pulling the chariots during the Yatra washes away sins and grants blessings. The divine journey also represents the idea of Lord Jagannath’s equal love for all—regardless of caste, creed, or class.
On the way to Gundicha Temple, the chariot of Lord Jagannath briefly halts at the Mausi Maa Temple, which adds to the spiritual importance of the procession.
Mausi Maa Temple, also known as the Ardhasini Temple, is dedicated to Goddess Ardhasini, who is believed to protect the city of Puri alongside Lord Kapalamochana Shiva. "Mausi Maa" translates to "maternal aunt" in Odia and Hindi. Devotees offer special prayers here, as it is believed that the Goddess Ardhasini saved Puri from floods in ancient times. The temple is located near Balagandi in Daitapati Sahi, and was constructed during the reign of the Keshari dynasty. Every day, ritual baths and pujas are performed for the goddess.
