Long ago, in the city of Indraprasthapur, there lived a Brahmin named Vedsharma. He was happily married to Leelavati, and together they had seven sons and a single daughter named Veeravati. Being the only sister among her seven brothers, Veeravati was cherished not only by her parents but also deeply adored by her brothers.
As Veeravati grew older, she married a suitable Brahmin. While staying with her parents after marriage, she decided to observe the Karwa Chauth fast for the long life of her husband, alongside her sisters-in-law. However, as the day progressed, Veeravati grew weak from hunger and eventually fainted.
Seeing their beloved sister in such distress, her brothers couldn’t bear the sight of her suffering. Knowing that Veeravati, being a devoted wife, wouldn’t eat until she saw the moon, they devised a plan to trick her into breaking her fast early. One of the brothers climbed a distant Vat tree, holding a sieve and a lamp, while the others led Veeravati to believe that the moon had risen.
When Veeravati regained consciousness, her brothers brought her to the roof and pointed to the lamp behind the sieve, pretending it was the moon peeking through the tree branches. Believing them, Veeravati made her offerings to the lamp and broke her fast.
However, as soon as she began eating, she experienced a series of bad omens. In her first bite, she found a hair, in the second bite, she sneezed, and shortly after, she received an urgent message from her in-laws. Upon arriving at her husband's home, she was devastated to find that her husband had passed away.
Overcome with grief, Veeravati blamed herself, thinking she had made a grave mistake during the fast. She cried inconsolably over her husband's lifeless body. Hearing her cries, Goddess Indrani, the wife of Lord Indra, appeared before her to offer comfort.
Veeravati, heartbroken, asked the goddess why she had been struck with such a terrible fate on the day of Karwa Chauth. She pleaded with Indrani to bring her husband back to life. Moved by Veeravati’s remorse, Goddess Indrani explained that because Veeravati had broken her fast without offering Argha (the sacred offering) to the moon, her husband had met an untimely death.
Indrani then advised Veeravati to observe the Chauth fast every month throughout the year, including the next Karwa Chauth, promising that her husband would be restored to life. Filled with hope, Veeravati followed the goddess’s instructions, observing each fast with complete faith and performing all the rituals with devotion.
In time, due to the spiritual merit (Punya) she accumulated through these fasts, Veeravati’s husband was brought back to life, and they were reunited, her unwavering devotion rewarded.
