Story of Veeravati and Her Seven Brothers
Long ago, in the ancient city of Indraprasthapur, lived a pious Brahmin named Vedsharma and his wife Leelavati. They had seven sons and one loving daughter named Veeravati. Being the only sister, Veeravati was deeply adored and pampered by her family.
After her marriage to a noble Brahmin boy, Veeravati once returned to her parents’ home to observe her first Karwa Chauth vrat. Determined to fast for her husband’s long life, she refrained from eating or drinking. However, by evening, she became weak and fainted due to hunger.
Her seven brothers couldn’t bear to see her in such a state. Knowing their sister wouldn’t eat until she saw the moon, they decided to trick her. One brother climbed a distant Vat tree with a lamp and a sieve. When Veeravati regained consciousness, her brothers told her the moon had risen and led her to the terrace.
Seeing the light behind the sieve, she mistook it for the moon. Believing the time for puja had arrived, she offered Argha (water offering) and broke her fast. But as soon as she began eating, she noticed ominous signs like a hair in her first bite, a sneeze with the second and an unexpected message from her in-laws.
When Veeravati reached her husband’s home, she found him lifeless. Heartbroken, she wept bitterly, realizing her mistake of breaking the fast prematurely.
Hearing her cries, Goddess Indrani, wife of Lord Indra, appeared before her. Veeravati begged for forgiveness and pleaded to bring her husband back to life. Moved by her devotion, Indrani revealed that because Veeravati broke her fast without seeing the moon, her husband suffered an untimely death. The Goddess advised her to observe Karwa Chauth vrat and monthly Chauth fasts with complete faith and discipline.
Veeravati followed the Goddess’s advice sincerely, observing every fast with devotion and purity. Over time, her accumulated punya (spiritual merit) revived her husband, symbolizing the eternal power of faith, love, and steadfastness.

The story of Veeravati teaches that sincere devotion and faith can even overcome death. Karwa Chauth is not just about fasting; it’s a festival that celebrates love, loyalty, and the sacred bond of marriage. Women across India observe it with faith, believing that their prayers protect their husbands and strengthen their bond for life.
