Chhathi Maiya, also known as Shashthi Devi, is considered the protector of children. According to religious texts, she is the sister of the Sun God. Devotees stand in water during Chhath Puja rituals, offering prayers to both Chhathi Maiya and Surya Dev to ensure protection and blessings for their family.

Legend has it that Prakriti Devi, the presiding deity of creation, divided herself into six parts. Her sixth part became the supreme mother goddess, Chhathi Maiya, also referred to as the mind-born daughter of Lord Brahma. She is worshipped during Chhath Mahaparv and six days after the birth of a child to bless them with long life, health, and success.
