Apara Ekadashi, an important Hindu fasting day dedicated to Lord Vishnu, will be observed this year on Friday, May 23, 2025. Many devotees observe a strict fast on this day, seeking spiritual cleansing and divine blessings. However, confusion often arises regarding the correct date for breaking the fast, also known as Parana.
Apara Ekadashi 2025: Parana Timing
While the fast will be observed on May 23, the Parana—which is the ritual of breaking the fast—should be done on the next day, May 24, 2025, during the morning hours. The Parana time is from 5:27 AM to 8:12 AM.
Parana should always be performed during Dwadashi Tithi (the 12th lunar day) and after sunrise. Importantly, one must avoid breaking the fast during Hari Vasara, which is the first quarter of the Dwadashi Tithi. The preferred time to break the fast is during Pratahkal (early morning). If that’s not possible, it should be done after Madhyahna, but never during it.
Spiritual Significance of Apara Ekadashi
Apara Ekadashi is considered highly auspicious and is believed to help in washing away past sins and granting divine grace. Devotees observe this fast with devotion and refrain from eating grains, lentils, and certain vegetables, dedicating the day to prayer and meditation.

Ekadashi Fast: One Day or Two?
Sometimes, two consecutive Ekadashis are suggested for observance. In such cases:
- Smartha devotees (householders) are advised to fast on the first day.
- Vaishnavas, widows, sanyasis, or those strictly pursuing Moksha (liberation), may fast on the second day.
