Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump secured a decisive win against his Democrat counterpart Kamala Harris in the state of Pennsylvania, reports the Associated Press. With over 96 percent of the votes counted, Trump was projected to win with 3,417,549 or 50.8 percent of the popular vote while Harris trailed with 3,245,675 or 48.2 percent votes.

A victory in Pennsylvania ensures 19 electoral college votes for Trump, taking his tally to 267, inches away from the 270 required for a victory. The fight in Pennsylvania was seen as the most critical and closest among all swing states.

The victory in Pennsylvania, referred to as one of three "blue wall" swing states, is significant as it has traditionally been seen as a Democratic stronghold. It narrowly went Donald Trump’s way in 2016 after almost three decades of voting for Democratic presidential candidates. Trump is currently leading in the other two swing states part of the “blue wall” – Michigan and Wisconsin.

Four years later, Democrat Joe Biden won all three states back for Democrats with a margin in Pennsylvania of about 80,000 votes out of more than 6.9 million votes cast. The states remain key electoral prizes this year.
