India slips 10 points in Democracy Index 2019; world average ‘worst’ in years

The EIU Democracy Index provides a snapshot of the state of world democracy for 165 independent states and two territories.

The Economist Intelligence Unit’s Democracy Index 2019 has marked the worst average scores since the index’s first edition in 2006.

Sharp regressions in Latin America and Sub-Saharan Africa were major deteriorations while spontaneous worldwide protests held the index from slipping further as countries improved their “democratic participation” scores.

The top five countries were Norway, Iceland, Sweden, New Zealand and Finland. The bottom five were Chad, Syria, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo and North Korea.

India, dropped ten places in the Democracy Index’s global ranking, to 51, with an overall score of 6.90.
