Political scientist John Mearsheimer, known for his keen insights, has forecasted a Donald Trump victory in the 2024 US presidential election, as reported by News18. Mearsheimer believes Trump’s anti-establishment appeal and a national mood bored of current geopolitical commitments could recreate his 2016 victory, reshaping both US foreign and domestic policies.
Mearsheimer highlighted Trump's strong performance in key swing states. He said that even without winning the popular vote, Trump could still secure the presidency.
“In the United States the popular vote does not determine who becomes the president. If it did Hillary Clinton would have won the election in 2016, it’s where the votes end up in electoral college. That means that series of swing states in the US really determine who becomes the president. There are number of states that are gonna go for Kamala Harris no matter what and there are number of states that are gonna go for Donald Trump no matter what. The critical question is what happens in the swing states,” Mearsheimer had said in an exclusive late-September interview with News18.
“If you look at the swing states, Donald Trump is doing very well. This is not to say he is doing much better than Kamala Harris but he is basically neck and neck if not slightly ahead in a number of those swing states. So Donald Trump could very well end up being the president even if he loses the popular vote,” he added.
“Almost no matter who the Republican nominee is, they will vote for that Republican. Many Republicans fully understand that Trump has all sort of liabilities but they think that Trump with liabilities is better than the democrats. So, it’s just important to understand that these deep fissures in American body politics make it possible for someone like Donald Trump, despite all his legal troubles and other troubles to be competitive,” added Mearsheimer.
