Nithin Kamath, co-founder and CEO of Zerodha, recently sparked a wave of online interest after humorously declaring his credit score of 747 wasn't "good enough" for CRED, the fintech firm led by Kunal Shah. The billionaire shared his personal credit check on X, tagging Shah in the viral post that quickly garnered over 1 lakh views.
Kamath's post read, "I did a credit check on @zerodhacapital to check out the flow, and my score is 747. So I am not good enough for CRED."
Shah promptly responded to Kamath, offering assistance: "I’ll call you and help you fix it. Glad you’re caring about scores and increasing awareness. More people need to do this."
This light-hearted exchange highlighted CRED's well-known internal policy: a stellar resume and top-notch skills aren't enough to secure a job at the company; prospective employees also need a credit score exceeding 750. Kunal Shah previously articulated the firm's rationale during a company event on February 25, stating, "The intent is simple. If you are building products that are going to drive responsible financial behaviour, we have to live it first... We can't be driving this when we ourselves don't live up to this promise."
Shah had also commented on the threshold, noting, "I would love to make (the threshold) to 800, but a lot of people are starting their careers early on. They cannot achieve 800 - they need credit age to be able to achieve that. But 750 is something that we want to ensure." He added that individuals who wish to join CRED but don't meet the score have a three-month window to achieve it, with the company actively providing assistance.
