The origins of Independence Day trace back to the early 1770s when the thirteen American colonies were embroiled in a struggle against British rule. Tensions had been mounting due to a series of acts imposed by the British Parliament, such as the Stamp Act and the Townshend Acts, which were seen as unjust taxation without representation. The colonies sought greater autonomy and were increasingly vocal about their grievances.

In 1774, the First Continental Congress was convened to address these issues. As the conflict intensified, the Second Continental Congress met in 1775, and by 1776, the call for independence had gained substantial support. On June 7, 1776, Richard Henry Lee of Virginia presented a resolution declaring the colonies' independence from Britain. A committee was formed to draft the formal declaration, and Thomas Jefferson was chosen as the principal author.
