Vismay Sharma, president of L’Oreal’s South Asia Pacific, Middle East and North Africa market (SAPMENA) has worked at the same company for more than 30 years. Speaking to CNBC's My Biggest Lessons, the Indian-origin senior executive said that he still enjoys his work and his purpose keeps him motivated.
Sharma added that while turnover, profitability, and market share are important concerns for any organisation, the real motivator for him is seeing the value in his day-to-day work. “Purpose is the biggest motivator. Finding purpose in what I do every day is the real long-term motivator. I love working in the beauty industry. It’s an industry that brings joy, self-confidence and wellbeing into people’s lives on a daily basis,” he said, adding that one of the biggest lessons he had learned was to create a shared vision and to commit to it.
"A lot of leaders like to create their own vision and transmit it across the organisation. My experience says that when you bring the team together and create a shared vision, it is much more powerful, much more profound and of course, people are much more committed to it because its their vision. My success and the success of the larger team comes from my ability to create the conditions for them (the team) to come together, to work together and collaborate to find solutions that are most appropriate for the organisation," he told the publication.
The senior L'oreal executive added that one of the most rewarding aspects of his work is the potential to positively impact communities and the environment, such as creating employment opportunities and reducing water consumption in salons that are in water-scarce regions such as the Middle East.
