King Charles III was diagnosed with cancer and has begun treatment, Buckingham Palace said on Monday, sparking a flood of support from around the world.
Charles, who became king upon the death of his 96-year-old mother, Queen Elizabeth II, on September 8, 2022, has generally enjoyed good health, barring injuries from polo and skiing.
Leading Prime Ministers and other dignitaries from across the globe wished the 75-year-old a speedy recovery after the news came through. Here are some of the reactions:
"He is a wonderful man, who I got to know well during my presidency, and we all pray that he has a fast and full recovery!" Former United States President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social.
The type of cancer has not been revealed, but the King, 75, began "regular treatments" on Monday, the statement said. Buckingham Palace said the King "remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible". He will postpone his public engagements and other senior royals are expected to stand in for him during his treatment.
Harry, the younger of Charles's two sons with the late Princess Diana, who now lives in California with his wife Meghan, plans to travel to see the king in the UK over the coming days, a source close to the prince said.
