The latest QS World University Rankings by Subject have unveiled a remarkable surge in the performance of Indian universities among G20 nations. Nunzio Quacquarelli, President at QS Quacquarelli Symonds, took to LinkedIn to share the impact of Indian higher education, marking a significant milestone in the nation's academic journey. Indian universities recorded a staggering 14% year-on-year improvement in average ranking, coupled with an impressive 54% surge in research output from 2017 to 2022.
“In terms of research output, India has become one of the world's most rapidly expanding research centres. From 2017 to 2022, its research output surged by an impressive 54%, making it the world's fourth-largest producer of research,” he wrote in his post.
He attributed the success to policies like the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, undertaken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Quacquarelli, reflecting on his conversation with the Prime Minister, noted the passionate commitment to revolutionise Indian education, “reflected in the ambitious targets within the NEP”.
“I had the honour of meeting the Prime Minister to discuss global higher education trends. During our engaging conversation, it was evident that PM Modi has a passionate commitment to revolutionise Indian education,” he wrote.
The analysis covered over 1,500+ universities in 96 countries, showcasing excellence in 55 academic subjects and five faculty areas.
India's has a notable presence in 44 out of 55 subjects assessed. Particularly noteworthy are the performances in fields such as Computer Science, Chemistry, Biological Sciences, Business Studies, and Physics. The Institutes of Eminence (IoE) have played a pivotal role in this success story, contributing significantly to the 69 Indian university positions within the top 100 across various subjects.
On a regional scale, India is the second-highest contributor of featured universities in the QS Subject Rankings, trailing only behind China in the Asian context.
He extended congratulations to the universities, administrators, faculty, and students whose dedication and hard work have propelled Indian higher education to new heights.
