Ig Nobel Prizes are given every year for ten unusual or trivial achievements in science.
The name 'Ig Nobel' is a play on the words 'ignoble' and 'Nobel Prize'. The prize was instituted in 1991 by Marc Abrahams, editor and co-founder of a science-based humour magazine Annals of Improbable Research. It aims at recognising achievements that make people laugh and then make them think. They are usually presented by a group of persons that includes Nobel Laureates at a ceremony at Harvard University's Sanders Theater. The awards are sometimes seen as veiled criticism or even gentle satire.
