The Kashmir Files, a Hindi film based on the exodus of the Pandit community from the Kashmir valley in the early months of the insurgency, has crossed the Rs 200-crore mark in terms of box office collection, as predicted by film analysts and theatre owners.
This is unprecedented for a film that didn’t have large scale promotions or publicity or even big stars. The film has no songs or comic relief and still has catapulted into an unstoppable phenomenon.
Movie critic Taran Adarsh tweeted that The Kashmir Files had even broke the record created by Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn and Ranveer Singh-starrer Sooryavanshi to become the highest grossing Hindi film during the pandemic.
The Kashmir Files is based on the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits from the Valley in 1990 and has minted over Rs 200 crore since its release on March 11. Actors Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher and Pallavi Joshi lead the cast of the emotional drama.
The film has also caused deepened divides between political parties.
PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti alleged that the BJP is promoting The Kashmir Files to incite people on religious lines and called for the setting up of a panel to probe the circumstances that led to the exodus of Pandits from the valley. Her demand came a day after National Conference (NC) chief Farooq Abdullah also called for setting up a panel to investigate the killings and the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits from the valley.
On March 23, BJP legislators interrupted Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal's address in the Delhi Assembly at the beginning of the Budget Session, demanding that The Kashmir Files be made tax-free here.
In Maharashtra, Minister Jayant Patil took a swipe at the opposition BJP after many of its MLAs allegedly attended screening of 'The Kashmir Files' film while business was still being transacted in the Lower House on Tuesday night.
