A man in Delhi was left astounded upon receiving an electricity bill of Rs 30,280 from BSES Rajdhani for the month of June. This eye-watering charge was shared on Reddit two days ago, triggering a wave of astonishment and sympathy among fellow residents.
"Pain. How is this even possible," the man wrote, accompanying his post with a screenshot of the BSES Rajdhani message, which demanded a payment of Rs 30,280 by July 9.
The Reddit user, who said he recently upgraded his 16-year-old air conditioning units to new five-star-rated ones, expected to see a reduction in his electricity expenses. However, his hopes were dashed when the new units failed to provide the anticipated savings.
"Bought new ACs thinking it’ll save money. It did not, in fact, save money. Four ACs, out of which at least two are running at a time," he lamented.

His post quickly went viral, with many users pointing out that with 4 AC units, the bill is not that high.
“You’re using 4 ACs, out of which at a time two ACs are running. We don’t know whether they’re 5 star or not, so let’s say you’re using a two 2 star AC at a time, that’s normal bill. Apart from ACs, you’re also using other appliances or machines. So it’s possible to have this high bill,” wrote a user.
Another wrote: “Bro I have two ACs and one cooler that runs constantly. Got a 40k bill.”
A third said this a June problem spotlighting the broader issue of escalating electricity bills during one of the hottest summers on record in Delhi.
“Electric bills in month of June have shot up like cray everywhere in NCR man. I have 2 ACs and they were not even being used that much more compared to may or July and yet the electric bill for May was 7k while June was 20k,” they wrote.
The capital endured relentless heatwaves in June and even last months, leading to complaints of boiling tap water and air conditioners struggling to cool homes. Power cuts became frequent with numerous complaints registered with electricity providers, who are buckling under the pressure of continuous high temperatures and increased energy consumption.
This incident is not isolated. Earlier this month, Jasveer Singh, co-founder of the Join Hood App, sparked a similar outcry on social media after revealing that he received a monthly electricity bill of Rs 45,491.
